How to Test the Performance of Motor with Multimeter?
Three phase motor
- If it is the three-phase motor, the first step is to measure the resistance of the three-phase winding with the 200Ω gear of the multimeter to check if its resistance is completely equivalent.
- If it is not equivalent, the motor must have been damaged.
- If it is equivalent, it is required to measure the resistance between each phase winding and shell with the 20Ω gear or 200Ω gear, and the resistance should be higher than 2Ω, otherwise the motor must be in bad conditions.
- If it is the single-phase motor, the 200Ω gear shall be used to measure the resistance of the primary and secondary winding respectively and sum up the two values, to check if it is equivalent to the value of serious-wound primary and secondary winding.
- If it is not equivalent, the motor must be damaged.
- If it is equivalent, please measure the insulation resistance between the primary and secondary winding and the shell respectively, and the value should be higher than 2Ω, otherwise the motor must be in poor condition. The gears of the multimeter are the same as those of the three-phase motor.
- Measure the DC resistance of the three-phase winding of the motor with the multimeter. The three measurement results are better to approach. If the difference is within 2%, the resistance of the winding is qualified. If the difference exceeds 10%, the phase with smaller resistance is probably have turn-to-turn short circuit.
- The insulation resistance between phases and earthing (shelling) insulation resistance among phases of the three-phase winding can be measured by 500V insulation megger. Various insulation resistances for the motor permanently stored should be over 0.5Ω, then the motor can be regarded as in good performance. If the value is between 0.1Ω and 0.5Ω, it means that the motor has been moisturized, and can be used after drying. If the insulation resistance is too low, it means that the insulation has been damaged.
- The rotor of the revolving motor should be flexible, free of any abnormal noise and friction. In such circumstance, it means that the bearing and air gap are in normal conditions.
- Earthing resistance (use the high gear of the Ω gear): The insulation resistance between the motor winding(three phase) and shell is generally required to reach 2M and above. The requirement can be lowered appropriately in the moisturized, acid-base environments. It is usually required to be no lower than 0.5M.
- Resistance between phases (use the high gear of the Ω gear): The insulation resistance between different phase winding is generally required to reach 2M and above. The requirement can be lowered appropriately in the moisturized, acid-base environments. It is usually required to be no lower than 0.5M.
- Three-phase resistance value (use the low gear of the Ω gear): As to the original resistance value of three-phase winding, the resistance values of the three-phase winding are required to roughly balance (The accurate data can be obtained through digital meter measurement. Motors with different capacities will have different requirements. It is usually required to not exceed 2%).
